The PIMCO fund, PCRDX, tracks the Dow Jones-AIG index exactly, and that is a pretty good commodities index.

Also, the principal that serves as collateral for the commodity-derivative positions in PCRDX is in TIPS, mostly shroter term, so the fund gets some income and also the benefit of any inflation adjustment in the TIPS--and of course those are US Treasury securities. I am very comfortable recommending PCRDX (or any of the other PIMCO commodit real-return funds) for anyone who wants to maintain long term exposure to a basket of commodities without the risk of buying futures for oneself. You can also buy PCRDX in an IRA.
