At first, I thought this might be a good idea, because we needed large bases in those countries to be able to contain Russia. But I don't think that is necessary or proper in the Middle East.

For one, Arabs and Muslims don't want a U.S. military presence in their lands. We should respect that. The Iraq gov't wants us there now, but we need to negotiate a drawdown.

Second, we now have rapid mobile strike capabilities. All we have to do is station a couple of aircraft carriers around the Middle East to be ready for any combat action needed. We don't need permission for that and it's a lot less likely to provoke Muslim sensibilities.

So I do believe the Middle East is the new bogeyman, like Russia was during the cold war. So we need a presence around there to swing into action when needed, but we have to do it in a way that isn't provocative.
