I am confident that they will give you a better idea about progress in Iraq than any gut feeling would.

I am not. At least not if you mean that following any specific trend or group of trends and seeing if they go up or down would itself give people a good idea. I do think that the effort could help inform the overall impression but the situation is too complex for a single graph or small series of graphs to represent it very well.
