I don't think we do, although I think this adminstration believes we do. However, what I mean by bogeyman is when one looks at the entire globe and looks for where the security threats are coming from, where do we find most of them? Two places: the ME and Asia (mostly west Asia and east Asia). Our military needs to adjust to these realities and keeping large contingents in Europe is not only costly, but an ineffective projection of power that doesn't take into account the changed politics of the world.

But are these bogeymen as real as we are led to believe? For an example, China has a sphere of influence that ranges fairly wide as do we but you don't see China threatening to invade another country.........the drumbeating over Taiwan notwithstanding. They pretty much respect everyone's boundaries. I am not saying they are saints but with Russia to the north and Japan to their northeast.........I think they are smart enough to respect the status quo.

And let me tell you I don't think we would have ever gotten Osama's attention if we did not put those bases in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf war. Why did we need bases there....why were the bases in Turkey not enough?

Our leaders are making dramatic policy decisions that effect whole nations and no one is watching to make sure that what they are doing makes good sense. Forget the cost to the American public..........these decisions seem to have major political repercussions down the road.
