Gitmo As A Propaganda Tool?

By Rob on Default
Say Anything

Just a bit ago I caught Ted Kennedy giving a speech about the Gitmo camp in Guantanamo Bay where he claimed that the camp should be shut down because it has become a “powerful propaganda tool” to be used for recruiting by the terrorists. A few minutes later there was a talking head on Fox News pushing the same idea.

Since this line of reasoning will apparently serve as the rallying cry
for those pushing to shut down Gitmo let me ask a couple of questions:

If we close down Gitmo, where do the prisoners go? I’m working off the assumption that those who want Gitmo shut down aren’t advocating for the release of the terror criminals held there back into the world’s population as that would be craziness.

So if we’re going to keep these people detained, where do they go? And once they get there, how do we keep that camp from becoming a “powerful propaganda tool” for the enemy? The enemy turned the allegation that a Koran was near a toilet in Gitmo into a propaganda tool, shouldn’t common sense tell us that detaining terror criminals, regardless of how humanely we do it, will likely be twisted into stories of horrid abuse by our enemies?

The anti-Gitmo crowd needs to wake up to the fact that they are playing right into the hands of the terrorists. The allegations of abuse made by the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are being made to have a calculated effect: Whipping the bleeding hearts of this country up into a frenzy thus occupying the time and resources our government could be using to fight the war on terror.

Its a bait-and-switch. They make the accusations, they’re taken at face value by the blame-America-first crowd and soon we have a domestic controversy occupying our national attention. They turn the tables and make us the bad guys. Meanwhile, the terrorists continue to lop the heads off hostages and plan attacks on civilian targets in countries across the world, all in the name of Islamic world domination.
