My point is that gold can do well without economic trouble.

Economic trouble is not a prerequisite for gold appreciation. As one who hopes for a rising gold price I would not want to base my greed on the hope of economic pain for others.

In the case of a major recession - I doubt gold would soar. Every time the economy looks weak bonds rally and gold falls -ummmm! When we see signs of economic expansion we see gold rally - ummmmmmm!
