Andrew - I liked your post and passed it on to a friend and this was his response.

Very good. But very untrue.

1. There have been 1683 US military deaths in Iraq. icasualties.org (actually now more since I researched this)
2. The murder rate in Washington DC is 45.9 per 100,000 according to the Statistical Abstract of the US (http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/04statab/law.pdf )
3. That murder rate includes knifes, baseball bats and other non-firearm murders.
4. The murder rate in Iraq (if there are 1683 deaths in 22 months and an average of 160,000 troops) is 574 per 100,000.
5. So the murder rate in Iraq for US soldiers is 12.5x the murder rate for DC residents.
6. Still pretty scary. The only major US city with a higher murder rate is New Orleans. That is why they legalized gambling in New Orleans – so organized crime could clean up the place.
7. The key point to me is that the highest murder rate in the country (except for New Orleans – the goddamn French keep screwing us up) is in the one city run by the federal government. Draw your own conclusions.
