Having said all that, it doesn't mean we should be insensitive toward the struggles of a factory worker or programmer who has lost his/her job.


You can do a Clinton, and "feel their pain." And as Clinton also did, you can pump money into retraining. But the bottom line is that the sooner people adjust to change, the better off they will be. You don't do them a favor by providing funds so that they can sit around on unemployment and retraining money, rather than being forced to move on.

The adjustment to be made should be treated like the adjustment from getting rid of a bad habit. Get it done and get on with your life.
