O/T & FYI: I've had occasion to purchase bulk plastic components for special engineering needs and you can get anything you want from material that's as hard as a rock (aka: structual plastics..) to materials you can tie in a knot - and they will then slowly return to their originally molded shapes (..aka: memory plastics like Saturn fenders..).

A comparison would be steel vs. aluminum. An aluminum electrical conductor or an aluminum structural member needs to be 1/3+ larger that it steel equivalent for the same usage. A wild azz guess would be that structual plastic would have to be twice the diameter of a steel re-rod to do the same job; and you're not going to use them in 'piling caps', 'primary footings', or 'bridge piers'.

You could also increase the number of rods used - spacing wise. They would probably serve very well in a roadway surface. And, I would think they would tend to absorb and attenuate vibrations from traffic much better than steel. They would also be dielectric; an insulator as opposed to a conductor and not subject to salt air oxidation or corrosion.

I remembering hearing / reading about the re-rods some time back, but then I thought maybe it was the re-rod "..chairs.." (..supports for the re-rods in the pour..) that they were pursuing first. I just don't have time to go over all this stuff twice or thrice....
