Thanks this is what I was looking for. Now why bother with Java at all? Could someone ans. that for me?

Among other reasons:

- hardware portability (change the underlying H/W without rewriting the application)
- OS portability (change the underlying OS without rewriting the application)
- standard API (lots of programmers who know how to program it)
- secure code model
- scaleable architecture (add features on top of existing app)
- cheap development tools
- seamless Internet connectivity
- "write once, run anywhere"

There are certainly still technical issues of concern, such as memory requirements, performance, and real-time determinism, but work is underway to address these areas.
