Gold is in a bull market when real interest rates are low and a bear when real interest rates are high. I guess this is another way of saying its attractiveness is the flip side of bonds and fiat currency based money -- old trustworthy gold becomes a friend when your money is being confiscated by inflation and at risk from untrustworthy politicians, particularly when bonds and treasuries don't even pay reasonable compensation for this.
