One city may get BLS into deploying BLS' first FTTP/VOIP service in the COUNTRY Example of competition, and that if the phone companies don't do something, they may get forced to, in one way or another.
This city is saying that if Cox and BLS won't go fiber, then the city municpality will. The city goverment wants to run fiber down every street of the around 150,000 resident city, and offer phone, video, and voice, with fiber speeds, at 20% lower prices than BLS and Cox currently have for those services
Now, b/c BLS is so threatened by it, BLS is actually in talks to go in with the city in a joint FTTP plan. They said the city may get BLS into deploying its first FTTP in the city. And not the FTTC BLS has talked about doing, it will FTTP, fiber down every street to every house, from what I understand.

Pretty interesting scenerio going on over there.
... and who again is rumored to of landed BLS??? Any VOIP service BLS offered in this city though would be through EGHT though for now, until it can build its own (SONS powered) VOIP network.
Just one more confirmation that competition from the cable cos, the Skypes of the world, and now even the city munis. are pushing BLS and all the other telcos into VOIP, whether they like it or not. And it looks like the telcos are being pushed into the only capable vendor's arms ;)
