Sure you can. But the fact of the matter is that for the past couple of decades, and especially now, ideology has come to dominate rational discourse. In many cases it is to the exclusion of everything else. Terms like RINO and DINO are weighed with great seriousness and litmus tests are proposed to determine if someone really deserves to call themselves a Republican or Democrat. It has gotten to the point that appointees aren't selected on abilities, but on what they believe in.

Once one or both of the present parties move away from ideological only approaches, then the non-ideology approach loses its power. But for now...
