The link below is to a well written March Motley Fool article. Shorts do not normally go after stocks with Ampex's valuation, but they do often swarm for awhile around those that have had truly phenomenal runs, and as we know Ampex had one of those. (The Global Crossing activity makes it very clear that a stock does not have to be listed on a major exchange or marginable to be shortable nowadays. There are ways to short ANY stock)

I do not know that naked shorting took place with Ampex...the number of times the float changed hands on the run from 3 to 57 could be explained by momentum player activity....but again, a good thing to be aware of. Personally I have nothing against shorting, but I think extended and deliberate naked shorting is an abomination in financial markets. ( As an aside, one of us on Yahoo or here should start up a Motley Fool board after the listing, dontya think?)
