BillyG, I doubt you'll get herky-jerky video in most applications when the PR sheet states it will support 8.0 Mbps (but does not specify the max bps rate) and the FAQ sheet says that the average bit rate for MPEG2 is 3.5 Mbps. Therefore, it supports over double the average bit rate, but MAY not (we don't have the full specs to know) quite reach the outer limits of the MPEG2 capability. And as David said, it will support the "average case," (http://www.exchange2000.com/~wsapi/investor/s-1197/reply-22186), which is all that most early-generation DVD players require.
This is beginning to sound like the "tastes great," "less filling" argument. As I've said before, there is room for both ZRAN and CUBE in this market. Although ZRAN is going to produce a hardware solution, it's late, and thus ZRAN's niche in the near-term will be SoftDVD. CUBE has the jump on the hardware solution. Once the DVD manufacturers make up their friggin' minds on the standards to be used, the whole industry should take off like a rocket, and carry BOTH stocks with it. I guess it's human nature to believe that one company will be the clear winner, but it's possible to have two (or more) companies reaping substantial profits in this industry.
I do like the high-tech analysis though, so please keep it up. (not like my comments are going to make you stop ...) |
