I agree with your take on the WSJ article. In no way is this to be considered an abandonement of networking. But it is an admission(with which I agree) that a Windows based net PC is unworkable(even with fiber) due to the need for hog downloads.
Even Java will need high speed links, Fiber or 100 meg twisted pairs to avoid waits. But once loaded they can exist and work well for dedicated uses where local disc/hard drives/CDROMS are not needed. It is still far from certain if it will ever impact the machines with Hard drives, as they can run windows with small waits, and so they may be largely immune to Java attacks.
