It's not simply the case that these people hear voices. It's often the case that they simply have thoughts and impulses which they act upon. "Normal" society might perceive their action as inapropriate. Schizophrenics percieve the origin of these thoughts and impulses as "not their own" (not necessarily an actual voice). So, to a schizophrenic mind, how can you say the schizophrenic was responsible for the action. Afterall, it was not their thought or choosing.

I don't think the drugs are actually diminishing their personality. It's not like thorazine was years ago. I think the loss of personality is more of a self perception because the schizophrenic used to believe he was gifted with special talents. If he is no longer schizophrenic (due to drug), he can no have those special talents (ie receiving "unkowable" information from a mystical source, etc).
