I only know from hearsay. For example, a friend's son was/is schizophrenic and also an extremely talented composer. There was a period when they tried different drugs, and one suppressed his white blood cell count...I'm not sure which one he ended up on but I want to say risperdal. However, he only took half the recommended dose. At that dose, he said, the bad voices went away but he could still hear God--and still compose. You cannot deny the beauty of his music which has been recorded by major artists.

Perhaps I err in favor of the patient--to listen to their reports and give those reports some credence rather than look down upon them with neat diagnoses. They may indeed be losing something special--something that in lesser doses in a normal bellcurve of population might indeed be mystical creativity. I know as a writer there are times I've felt that my characters wrote themselves or images came unbidden or that I was connected to a larger whole and believe it or not, I've written things that later appeared prescient. In any case, those experiences while writing are part of the reward.

There was a book written to this point years ago called shadow syndromes. IE what is relatively subclinical and even useful in a general population, if too severe, can become a disorder. So perhaps they are winning and losing with the drugs. Thats nobody's fault in particular, it's not like we can fix everything.
