You might enjoy a book I read recently called An Unquiet Mind : A Memoir of Moods and Madness by Kay Jamison. This is a book by a psychiatrist (and the author of the definitive text on manic-depressive illness) who herself suffered from severe bipolar disease. She describes how hard it is for her to take lithium because of what it takes away from her mind, although she is not functional without it.
