You will be pleased to know that many of the seniors I deal with are going in to the trades. Last semester I had a future plumber, a future carpenter, and several car repair folks. I do wish we had technical high schools that would teach the trades, because that's what many of our students want. One of our school board members was really behind the idea, but unfortunately the rest were of the "everyone should be planning on college" mindset, which is just not realistic. Many of my students have neither the interest nor the aptitude for formal education, yet they are clearly gifted at working on cars, or at welding, or whatever. What I wish we could teach those students is how to refine their skills, AND the business management skills that they might need were they to open their open business one day. That would be a good relevant education, and would teach them what they need to know.
