I'm 100% in favor of kids taking up a trade. There are large numbers of people who do not have the aptitude or desire for pursuing a college education which, as you noted, will not necessarily give them the skills they will need to get a job once they are out.

Your example of the journeyman vs. doctor in your area is an interesting comparison, but what it leaves out is that the doctor has much greater earning capacity over his/her lifetime. The journeyman is at or neear the top of what he can expect to earn (unless he starts his own business, which in America is really the way to go about acquiring wealth). The doctor is just starting out.

All this assumes of course, we do not have some form of Hillarycare imposed in the future.
