Unfortunately, I think many Americans are crisis driven. We, as a country, don't seem to focus on problems until they become very large and detrimental.

The steps taken to enhance airline security after 9/11 are an example, and from all reports, airline security really hasn't improved at all since 9/10/01. Edit: All they've managed to do is make flying a major pain in the ass, IMO.

It sure makes life frustrating though. It's analogous to living with people who are always LATE. I can't stand that. I'm always early. So when I deal with people who are late, I end up waiting a very long time indeed.

When I was growing up, my sister was chronically late. She still is, and there are times when she doesn't even show up. We just adopted the attitute of "we are leaving at 10:30, and if you're ready, you can come along. If not, we'll see you when we get back."
