Certainly, I think that Durbin's remarks were worse than Trent Lott's praise of Strom Thurmond's campaign, for which he lost his leadership position. And you could be charitable and say that Trent Lott didn't mean to sound like he endorsed Thurmond's Dixiecrat platform, he just stuck his foot in his mouth trying to say something nice about the old man on his birthday. But Durbin certainly knew what he was doing - he was picking up the Amnesty "Gulag of our times" card and running with it.

It should also be noted that Lott got most of the outrage from his own party that didn't want to be associated with Southern racism anymore. I'm hearing silence from the Democrats on Durbin.
