Re: The unions have shot themselves in the foot.

I completely disagree. If you look at the example of enlightened management of European corporations, particularly in Germany, you see an entirely different structure to corporate governance. There, unions get seats on corporate boards, get a voice in how corporations are managed and have achieved much higher and more secure standards of living than in the U.S.

It seems that the U.S. system breeds much greater dysfunction, looked at from the point of view of society. Here we have the obscene situation where a tiny handful of sociopathic CEOs rape the system for 500 times what these tightwad cranks are willing to pay their labor force. And that's not enough for these bastards, so they've managed to steal an entire government with the intention of further destroying the future for the citizens of the U.S. while they greedily bankrupt the national treasury as well as the trade imbalances as the grossly over-paid CEOs merrily scour the planet for the cheapest labor rates in a continual race to the bottom for wages and a race to a new feudalism for the planet. The American capitalist system has become completely dysfunctional for most of the people, not only of the U.S. but large swathes of the planet where our imperial armies rampage, conspire, subvert democracy or otherwise act as a force of evil.

The American model of capitalism is broken and needs to be replaced with something more sane.

The Social Security debate is just symptomatic of a society that makes no sense. No other industrialized nation on the planet would come any where near to deciding to throw all its old people and disabled into the streets to fend for themselves. Only America seems capable of such grotesque cruelty as the fat cats march on to ever greater riches and ever more immoral inequality.
