The goal of the International Vegan Society is that most of the world will be vegan by 2050. Certainly the percentage of vegans and vegetarians among young people is quite high and growing, not only in America but in Europe as well. It is a movement led by the affluent and highly educated, however. It is really common where I live, and if you consider the growth and expansion of natural foods stores like Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, it seems like there are a lot of people either not eating meat or only eating organic meat.

I do think that mad cow is going to explode at some point in America, because our government seems to be hiding the extent of the problem. And I bet even more people will stop eating deer because of wasting disease. And I think the animal rights movement is just getting started in letting people know how the meat they eat is grown. I don't think most people have any idea of the cruelty or disease potential that is involved, really.

The real problem with meat is that it is a status symbol in developing nations. Sort of like smoking, it is declining in America as the health risks become fully known, but increasing in China.
