Wait a second . . . OEMs will sell a product now without regard to whether a standard may change in the future. If there is a current market, then they will sell into it. In fact, OEMs love to sell products that are "new," "enhanced", "improved," etc. It's the consumer's problem if the standards change or don't evolve. I owned an outboard dbx decoder -- the OEM was happy to sell it to me. How many dbx discs & tapes do you see?

However, I do think that software upgradability will appeal to some consumers and will be used as a selling point by manufacturers. In the current 56kbit modem wars, software upgradability to the eventual 56kbit standard is a key feature.

Software upgradability usually costs money, so consumers may pay extra for it.
