Hi Karen,
I had a visceral angry reaction to Durbin's words when i first read accounts of what he said. I dont like Durbin. But when i read the statement before this brouhahah over here, I agreed with your interpetation. There is nothing wrong with being a passionate opponent of mistreatment of prisoners, if thats what you consider US govt actions to be. Durbin however is prone to hyperbole and he was hoisted by it. He should have just said that you wouldnt expect this treatment from US folks and left out the hitler and gulag references. He piled on the Amnesty International language which also was not well received. Like Dean he got carried away and he will pay a price. Mike
