BellSouth to add 1500 Broadband Jobs

Last week I wrote that the telecom downturn, or at least the loss of
telecom jobs might be coming to an end. Now BellSouth in a surprising
move says it will hire 1500 to handle its booming broadband business.
The Wall Street Journal has the details, and points out that it is 7%
increase in total broadband-related workforce, which is estimated to be
around 20,000. The company has 63,000 total employees. The hiring binge
is because the company is looking to rapidly increase its network and
DSL penetration. It is also looking at boosting speeds on its DSL
network to 6 megabits per second by end of 2005. The bulk of the new
positions will be for technicians and engineers, writes the Journal.
