Ray, playing space invaders is just as real, especially on the receiving end, but is much less fatal for the attackers. Hence its popularity.

Military people have never been keen on being killed and the idea isn't to die for one's country but to get the opposition to die for their's.

During peace-time, military activities are a lot of fun. When it's time to fight, the military want a whole bunch of civilians who they can then order around [being the experts, they get to sit safely back at base and do the ordering, of hors d'ouevres, and manoeuvres]. Then, the enemy dies for their country, the civilians die for the glorious Motherland [or Fatherland] and the military brass do lunch.

It would be very easy to reach enlistment goals. Try doubling, tripling and quadrupling the pay, and paying $10 million life insurance to nearest and dearest in the event of death. Then, there would be crowds around the enlistment centres and the quality of people would zoom up. Wives would be telling their husbands to sign up and go to the front. $10 million and a new husband would be very attractive to a lot of people.
