We'll Build Them, But Will They Sell?
Doug Petch blog
Just as us Bluegrass-types were getting used to the idea that Toyota's first American-built hybrid would be made locally in Georgetown, they hit us with this (subscription) -

The low price of petrol means there is no financial justification for buying fuel-efficient hybrid petrol-electric cars in the US, according to Toyota, maker of the hybrid market leader, the Prius.

Kazuo Okamoto, who takes over as head of research and development at Toyota next month, said the extra costs of hybrid cars more than wiped out any financial gains of lower fuel consumption. Buyers in the US would have to want to help the environment, not just save money. In Japan and Europe, the extra costs were approximately balanced by fuel savings.

According to the article, Toyota officials believe it will take until 2010 before a hybrid vehicle would be value-competetive with a "normal" car. It goes on to point to an Edmonds.com survey that estimates that the cost of buying and running a hybrid is up to $5,283 more over five years than a gasoline powered car. It further notes that a Prius owner would have to drive 66,500 miles per year at current gas costs in order to recoup the extra cost as compared to a similar gas-engined car.

So tell me again - why did you buy that hybrid?"

And an answer

>>So tell me again - why did you buy that hybrid?<<

1) Fear of higher gas prices
2) Tax credits
3) Employer incentives
4) Access to car pool lanes
5) Great way to pick up greenie chicks!
