"The Mote in God's Eye" was a different book by those two. In Lucifer's Hammer, a comet strikes the Pacific. HUGE tsunami. Destroys LA, SF, flood the cental valley and lots of the plains states. Does a really GOOD job of solving the population problem. Probably moves Hubbert's Peak back several centuries.
