Chaining prisoners into a fetal position, and leaving them in the dark for a day or two while they urinate and defecate on themselves, indeed, something that I cannot imagine US personnel engaged in.

Yes, the distraction is very effective.

Personally, I do not think that humiliation and temporary physical discomfort are necessarily inhumane treatment for a prisoner of war who has useful information. I do not know if such treatment is productive or not. If it isn't productive, then we must disallow it. If it is productive and we want to use it, then we must make a case for it.

It's really dumb to be wasting time over the conflating of what Durbin said and what some people inferred that he said when we could be dealing with what is or isn't appropriate treatment of prisoners.
