Good posts RD. I am enjoying your intellect and wit so please don't take what I say as personal in any way. You had me with you until this sentence.

"It is still up to society to decide when one becomes a person with rights that society will act to protect."

This seems to be somewhat at odds with the idea of inalienable rights. Past Societies have "decided" that Blacks were not persons. Did this mean they were not?

"we can't possibly KNOW God's mind"

If you mean exhaustively, then I agree, but if you mean at all, I wonder how inalienable rights can be sustained, and frankly, I wonder how you know that?

My approach here has been to put aside the God question entirely and meet the materialist on his or her own terms. If life is strictly material then science can answer questions of fact regarding Human life. It is incontrovertible from a scientific POV that new Human life begins at conception. Therefore if Human life is to be valued then such things as location, level of development, dependency and size are all irrelevant to the basic question of when does Human life begin.

I too hold that abortion might be morally acceptable in a case where the life of the mother is in clear danger, but I differ in that I do not see how any level of development can be used to justify abortion. Children do not have lesser rights than adolescents or teens or adults. All are simply passing stages of Human development that do not affect the essence of the person. I'd love to hear your comments on this.
