I was just pointing out that you made a blanket and unwarranted statement. One that happens to be contrafactual.

Nothing blanket about "In any case I think a lot of those European cars could handle the roads as well as many American cars." I don't think its unwarranted or counterfactual either.

A blanket statement would be something like "all of those European cars would be just fine in America". I said nothing of the sort.

...Allowing tempered glass instead of safety glass is another place weight can be saved. And so on.

Small light cars are, everything else being equal, less safe, but you don't have to cut out the specific safety features. There are plenty of ways to cut weight other than eliminating bumpers, and adequate suspension, safety glass, side impact beams, ect.

If you are asserting that there isn't any way to make the cars smaller and lighter without eliminating important safety items than you are effectively arguing against the proposed tax credit/penalties based on fuel economy as well.
