Maurice, Re: "dueling" I made reference to an opinion expressed 150 years ago about a practice that had been on the wane for 50 or more years even then. But that heritage along with the general American proclivity to "speak softly but carry a big stick" is just part of our nature and a part I hope to see preserved. It could be that said proclivity has contributed to our position as "global superpower" and "world policeman" and if so is an unfortunate side effect of a basically positive feature. For my part I want this country out of the "world policeman" role ASAP. And even more importantly, I want our borders sealed to the maximum degree ASAP. I look with hope to "peak oil", "global economic meltdown", "H5N1" or Osama's next outrage to be the catalyst to begin a new American Isolationism.

This country, especially the Old South is an incredibly peaceful place. Europe is peaceful but only because there are armies of gendarmes everywhere. Here, we don't even lock our doors at night. When I was younger I hitchhiked all over this country and never worried about watching my back, even in rough places. I've lived in all sorts of places abroad and everywhere there, even your "civilized" places, watching your back is your first order of business. But being a sort of toughie I kinda enjoyed the challenge. <g>

I have young children and I'm teaching them as I was taught; to stand up for yourself but never ever be a bully or be impolite. Its the American way.
