US Democrats demand inquiry into Iraq, Guantanamo abuse

US Democrats in the House of Representatives have called for an independent commission to investigate alleged abuse of detainees at US-run prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo.

"It is a disgrace that the matters relating to the treatment of detainees have not been meaningfully investigated by this House," said Nancy Pelosi, the leader of opposition Democrats in the House.

"The treatment of detainees is a taint on our country's reputation, especially in the Muslim world, and there are many questions that must be answered," Ms Pelosi said.

"The safety of our country depends on our reputation and how we are viewed, especially in the Muslim world."

She welcomed proposed legislation by Democratic politician Henry Waxman calling for the creation of a commission on prison abuse.

The Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq was a major embarrassment for the US administration but it denies there has been serious abuse at the US war on terrorism camp at Guantanamo in Cuba.

Ms Pelosi said that among the questions to be probed during an inquiry would be how the prison mistreatment was allowed to begin, why it was allowed to continue and how far up the chain of command the abuse goes.

"Our country's standing in the eyes of the world depends on getting to the bottom of the detainee abuse matter - a fact that will ultimately force Republicans to stop placing obstacles in the path of a full and independent inquiry," Ms Pelosi said.
