If it were so, then France and Germany would have eagerly joined the US and the UK in their Iraq crusade.... France and Germany wouldn't have committed a meager 1,000 or 2,000 troops like Poland and Italy. A more likely commitment would have been 10,000 to 20,000 French troops alone --plus the Charles de Gaulle carrier. At the same time, it would have galvanized the buildup of a truly EU army since no rift would have broken out between "Old" and "New" Europe... Of course, a grim side-effect might have been that the 311 bombs would have been set off in Brussels instead of Madrid.... Hopefully, France has resisted the siren song of colonial warfare --as far as the Arab world is concerned-- much to Judeoconservatives' chagrin. Gus
