Perhaps by "long term doubters" Lindy meant people who reflexively oppose everything that Republicans propose, merely because it was Republicans who propose it. And we should throw in people who reflexively oppose everything that Democrats propose, merely because it was Democrats who proposed it.

Madison was right to doubt government, but he was an all purpose doubter. Sometimes he supported the Federalist position, sometimes he supported the Anti-Federalist position, sometimes neither. He thought for himself.
