The Trent Lot fiasco was, indeed, a good example of my phases of spindoctoring a political embarrassment, which, by the way, I am still tweaking.

Here's the latest version:

1. Panic.
2. Denial.
3. Coverup.
4. Acceptance of the inevitable.
5. Ceremonial jettisoning of the scapegoat.
6. Reward for the uninvolved.
7. Elevation of the guilty to senior stateman status.
