Ascend May Get Revenue Boost Frm WorldCom/AOL Deal

ISSUER: ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS INC.
SYMBOL: ASND

WASHINGTON (FFBN) -- Ascend Communications Inc. is well
positioned to benefit from today's deal between WorldCom Inc. and
America Online Inc.

Due to the alliance with America Online, WorldCom's subsidiary
UUNET Technologies will ramp up IDSL, a digital subscriber line which
communicates at roughly twice the speed of current analog modems,
deployment to 200 cities shortly according to John Sidgemore, chief
executive officer of UUNET. The new high speed service was earlier
predicted to reach 117 cities by year end, according to America's
Network Magazine.

UUNET deploys its current ISDL offering on Ascend's MultiDSL
platform product. The company is Ascend's largest customer, accounting
for 13% and 16% of Ascend's revenues in the three month and six month
periods ended June 30, 1997.

UUNET was not immediately available for comment regarding
whether the expansion would entail further purchases from Ascend.
