Light is absorbed and the surrounding electron jumps energy levels equal to the energy of the photon absorbed. Sometimes it is less and phonons are released also (heat, etc.).

Here is a diagram of a solar cell. When the electron absorbs enough energy to break the nucleus attraction, it becomes a free flowing electron. These electrons are collected by thin wires on the surface of the semiconductor material, thus current flowing on the metallic path back to the hole created.
