The Rather case smacks of a Karl Rove dirty trick. Review Rove's long political career and see how he often plants phony evidence to blame his opponents for.

For instance, Rove was running Gov. Clements campaign and was behind right before the big debate. He called in the press and FBI to his office and pointed out a bugging device he claimed must have been planted his opponent. This trick may have swung the election., But later, the FBI lab determined that the bug had only a 6-hour battery on it and that only 2 of the hours had been used. Meaning the bug was planted two hours before the FBI got there, exactly when Rove planted it.

Then three smear campaigns against Silver Star winner heros in a row, McCain, Cleland and Kerry, using his foot soldiers to spread 100% false stories that all three were cowards, traitors, not real heros and so forth.

Dan Rather has a sterling career and has never been guilty of faking evidence in his life. So what happened this time? I say it was Rove. After all, Rather's story was completely true. Bush absolutely used family clout to stay out of the war. That's all it was about too.
