Oil Tanker Near Trinidad Catches Fire After Explosion, Local Coast Guard Says
The Associated Press
Jun 22, 2005

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - An oil tanker off Trinidad's southern coast caught fire following an explosion Wednesday, Trinidad Coast Guard officials said.
The coast guard responded with helicopters and rescue boats but officials said they were unable to get close enough because of the intense heat.

There were 26 people on board, four of whom were reported missing, said Trinidad Coast Guard Lt. Hadyn Poon.

He said an explosion happened while the tanker was anchored for maintenance just off the coast of Trinidad. He said the ship, Tradewind, was not loaded with oil at the time.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, or the extent of the blaze.

"We heard a loud boom," Myria Chate, an employee of the nearby Crewsinn Hotel said. "We felt the building vibrating as if there were an earthquake. Shortly after, plumes of black smoke could be seen going into the air."
