Topday during the Armed Services Committee hearings, Senator Byrd lectured Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld about "high horses". Byrd wants Rumsfeld to get down off his high horse when he is in the presence of the duly elected representatives of "the people" whose views he (the Senator) and other senators completely understand. Not only do the senators understand ""the people" but they represent them, especially when confronted by and confronting other government officials who are not duly elected and therefore not capable of representing the views of the people.

"So when you come up here, Mr. Secretary, get down off your 'high horse' and quite lecturing us" admonished the venerable Senator Byrd.

Rumsfeld made no reply to Byrd's comments, observations, and instructions.

Byrd should be an expert on "high horses". I think the horse was the favorite means of transportation for the KuKluxKlan in whose service the good senator from West Virginia undoubtedly earned his riding spurs.
