Ted, Why do you think the torture was so widespread? I wouldn't call it widespread, but all of the incidents probably stem from the same thing. Superiors put tremendous pressure on the jailers and the interrogators to get intelligence information, and they're willing to look the other way while the unmentionable occurs within sealed-off rooms. It's never OK, but among other things, that should tell us just how limited intelligence gathering can be, despite the claims that the war on terrorism can be fought by the CIA alone. What do you call torture? Most everything you mentioned, except forcing them to violate their religious beliefs, since any prisoner can use that excuse for just about anything. Tenchusatsu
