I planted Black walnut and Butternut here on the farm
back about 28 years ago. Unfortunately, it would be
awhile before it would be of use to carpenters,
although there would be plenty of small wood in some
of them already. However, I grew them for shade and
for the nuts which the animals around here seem to like.
The squirrels bury some of them, so there are new
nut trees coming up all over the place. Found one
growing in an unused flowerpot last summer (talk about
a domesticated squirrel!).

Up in this area, the trees that are probably most sought
after these days are the huge White pines suitable for
turning into upscale log homes. Much as the houses
are nice looking, i'm not terribly thrilled about seeing
the skyline of the region being altered by the cutting
of some of the oldest and tallest pines in the region.
