There are some black walnuts (J. californica) around here and there in Cal; including the ranch next door)
All the English Walnuts are grafted onto black rootstock, too.
I think I've planted a few, thrown some nuts around, too, but I don't know if any took.
Aside from scattering seeds and transplanting some ash that have come up in the garden, I've started trying to grow an eastern fall color forest. Planted some maples on the hill, + a hawthorne. I'm planning on getting some liquid ambers (what y'all call sweet gum) and some sugar maples next year. Maybe one or two others.
We started a sugar maple when we moved up 20 years ago.
The main trunk is now maybe 3" in dia; had a second sprout out, maybe half the size. There are native maples; Cal. Big Leaf; I know of one along the creek.
