The social security funds did not dissapear without a trace. They were used to buy treasury bills backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

We were discussing the traceability after that point. Once SS buys the treasuries, where does the money go? I think the traceability ends when it enters into the general fund. I don't think that the actual SS funds are "tagged" in any way to tell where they go after they enter the general fund. We said that the surplus on SS went to pay down the public debt for a few years, but I think that was merely a convenient way to describe it....it sounded good. Some General Fund computer sent some public debt computer some bits that reduced the public debt.
