mike, on Washington Week, they had a reporter just back from Iraq. A woman, I forget her name, a decent reporter who is often on their panel. Her report was that the American military think they are making a lot of progress. Their job #1 is training the Iraqis, and it's happening, as hundreds of Iraqi battalions take the field. The Iraqi government is holding together, the Shia haven't been provoked into massive anti-Sunni reprisals. A recent Iraqi poll asked Iraqis if Iraq was moving in the right direction or the wrong direction: 62% said the right direction. That's quite a large number in a country with suicide bombs going off every day and testament to how awful it was under Saddam.

You don't see the progress if all you pay attention to is the body counts.

So stay the course means just that, keep training the Iraqi army and police, pressure the government to keep on schedule, keep the Kurds on board, keep the pressure on the insurgency and work to close the border - keep doing what we are doing.
