My WAG is that you are correct, that the 40 MB units are about to be discontinued. Most companies would have to discount them to a loss, and eventually liquidate them in bulk for pennies on the (cost) dollar. TiVo is in the enviable position that they can give them away, probably claim a passive loss on the hardware, and still ultimately make money on the transaction (through subscription fees).

Comcast comes on board in '06, with the new tivo software approach. I imagine other cable companies are waiting to see the finished software product, but beta's shouldn't be too far off. If it's a home run, us "civilians" won't know it, but the stock will start climbing (of course the reverse is true).

I would buy on any "bad news".
